MEMBERSHIP & GIVING F.A.Q.s

Is Sunstone Chapel a church?

Yes. We are an assembly of liberal-minded millennials, Gen Z, and perpetual learners. Together, we create our faith community as we find empowerment, healing, and a safe space to explore the sacred and make the world a better place. We worship and create community together, albeit primarily asynchronously.

Can I be a member of two churches?

Sunstone Chapel embraces dual membership. Not all churches allow this however, while other church’s simply do not consider it an issue at all. It’s best to check with the other church for clarification, if this is something you’re interested in. There are many legitimate reasons to participate in two or more churches. We encourage you to pursue fulfillment and spiritual nourishment wherever you can find it.

May I get a tax-deductible receipt for my financial contribution for the purposes of itemized tax filing?

Since we are not structured as a 501(c) (3), your financial contributions can not be written off when you do your taxes. As per the IRS, “Churches and religious organizations may be legally organized in a variety of ways under state law, such as unincorporated associations, nonprofit corporations, corporations sole and charitable trusts.” (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1828.pdf). Sunstone Chapel is not structured as a non-profit. This means we pay taxes and can make the money we need in addition to financial gifts received instead of depending on donations as our only source of income. Because a part of our Vision is providing scholarships and grants, a structure which enables us to reach this goal sooner and without the limitations inherent in 501(c) (3) better meets the needs of our ministry.

The 501 (c) ( 3) status has benefits, but we prioritize our freedom and independence.  We are happy to pay taxes in lieu of non-profit status to maintain our autonomy and self-sufficiency. Nonprofit status also limits activities such as earning income, political involvement, and selling goods and services. We want to be able to speak our truth when it comes to politics and where we stand. We refuse to be censored. We want to provide goods and services without limitation. We want to be free to use the income to support our ministries. We want to bless our ministries and others without constraint. Multiple streams of income will help sustain our faith community and serve our membership. Additionally, our structure allows us to pay our staff well and provide fairer and greater earning opportunities for those we work with.

The 501 (c) ( 3) status is confronting political challenges and could face drastic changes. It’s also possible that other ministries and churches that can’t adapt may actually need our contributions to support their work. We think of our structure as “for-profit, for-giving”. In order to give more, we have to earn more. We also believe that being “for profit, for giving” adds a new level to our ministry opportunities, relationships, and influence.

Isn’t this so interesting? We think so! If you’d like to learn more about for profit churches, ministries, and faith communities we suggest this article from Rhonda Ware Williams, 16 Reasons to Consider a “For-Profit” status for your Ministry. Ms. Williams is a Dallas Theological Seminary graduate and businesswoman. Much of our response to this question is borrowed from her informative article mentioned above.

May I pay my membership or offer a gift by check?

Yes, of course! Please contact us for details on how to mail your check. Thank you!

Before I join, please remind me of your Mission and Vision?

Our Mission is to minister to unchurched liberal-minded younger generations (Millennial’s, Generation Z), perpetual learners, and those who’s circumstances make relationship with a physical church community difficult.

Our Vision is to serve as the leading spiritual community for seekers of a unique, creative approach to modern liberal faith (1) free of the limitations fixed location and conventional processes demand, (2) strengthened by the unlimited possibilities inherent in meaningful, online community, and (3) enriched by gifts received and ministries rendered by offering scholarships, grants, and donations to financially support individuals and causes that help us advance our values.
